Road Trip#Thailand# North to Bangkok

Chiang Mai - Pai - Bangkok

sunny 35 °C

2 years already that I was been to this country which was my first trip far away from home.
We decided to go to Chiang Mai to just going down to Bangkok later on.

We arrive at 12h30, then we took a cab for 150 baht, you can book it inside the airport just next to the door.
Green Tulip was our first hostel, Stella takes care very well of her hosts as if we were babies haha.
If I chose this hostel it’s because I read a lot of good reviews of her and I wasn’t disappointed.
The price is 450 baht with fan,600 with A/C and breakfast.
We found another good hostel with good location; the name is Kasalong Gardens Home and I definitely recommend it.
200 baht for a private room( but no A/C, no toilet in the room).
If you are little bit angry : Ham and cheese sandwich at 7eleven 25 baht !

But It depend what you need, as it was our first step in Southern Asia,I wanted someone will take care of us and show us things to do around Chiang Mai.
So we stayed longer than expected: 2 weeks in total.
We loved doing massage there, with this price, we had few ( 200 baht for a thai massage,250 with a oil one)
Be careful though, Thai massages are very strong... those are apparently the best in the world but you will suffer haha.
We’ ve been to the Night Safari (700 baht with transportation) the first night,it’s cool you can touch a lot of different animals, but don’t go see the tiger show.
It is only circus stuff where the tiger looks sad and hungry...
One lion who was behind a screen try to be closer to me and his leg touched an electric line and he was suffering, trying to bit his own leg to remove the pain ..
OMG I almost cried, this is just terrible to see when you love animals... and all of them are really skinny..
Anyway, except this part the night safari is something cool to do if you are in Chiang Mai.

The next day,we were to a retirement elephant camp, this is one of the coolest thing to do.
When you ride an elephant, you have to know that they treated them very badly when they were young.
In this type of camp, where I’ve been, you can’t ride them, you feed them, go to swim with them and at least you can see that they are happy.
Count between 2400 and 2600 baht.

Day 3 : I was back to the place where I realized my dream: the Tiger Kingdom.
It didn’t really change, tigers looks still ok, one was playing in the water.
Tom was kinda scared lol, by the way one men got mauled by a tiger in Phuket,he is still alive.
Price : to touch the smallest, small and big, count 1260 baht.

There is a monkey school close by,don’t go,monkeys are just sad ...

On our day 4, we booked a tour to go to Doi Inthanon national Park( 1100 baht pp) and then we’ ve been to the night market.
Doi Inthanon is good if you like nature, for my part is worth it but it depend about what you like to see and about how much time you have.
The night market in Chiang Mai is quiet big but the best one is on Sunday in the city center.

On our 5 th day we just chilled,I rent a scooter for 150 baht and ride around the city.
Then,at the end of the day,we decided to go to the old city as every book speak about it.
What I can say ,there is nothing special except nice nightclubs/bar on the top of the shopping center Maya.
By the way in Thailand, one shop is doing kind of the same clothes than Hollister under the name COCO.

On our 6th day, we’ve been at 10 AM at the airport plaza shopping center.
Not to do shopping but to be volunteer in a beautiful association for dogs and cats.
It was such a great experience,3 puppies got adopted.
We took the puppies in front of the entry of the shopping center and we got quiet a lot of money for them, feeling usefull is such a great experience.
You know, just stop to think about ourselves for a while and just focus about small things but which are the essentials...
Tom eat seafood and he got sick the next day lol.. be carefull don’t eat seafood in Malls...

Day 7; what a nice day to be just with animals, we tried to help as much as we can
Lyn and Phon are the 2 owners of this shelter with 400 dogs and 150 cats
One black dog needed a lot of affection because he just arrived the day before.
We saw the 3 puppies left from yesterday and they are so cute.
I always thought to adopt an animal is so much better than just buy it;
Why ? because this animal will be forever grateful and he will give you maybe more affection than any other dogs + you did a good action + you didn’t pay 1000 dollars...
You can contact Lyn by their website: http://www.santisookdogsandcats.org/en/contact/

You can be volunteer one day , 2 days or even longer just need to talk with her.

Then, at the end of the day, we had a 2 hours free Meditation course with a monk named KK.
He is such a nice guy, trying to help a lot around him.
It was a really great experience, you can have just a chat with them Monday to Friday 5 to 7, or even do a Meditation Retreat Tuesday till Wednesday.
Here it’s their website for more information : http://monkchat.net/
And to finish our day,we’ve been to the Sunday Market.

Day 8: As I said, Tom got sick because of seafood,so we cancelled the tour to chiang rai – 1200 baht
This is on this day that I worked on my blog maybe for like 5 hours non stop lol.
If you can go for a day trip to Chiang Rai,I advise you to do it.
I went there 2 years ago and it was nice to see.

Day 9 : Departure to Pai

We staid in Pai for 5 days.
This town is really good to relax, the landscapes are incredible.
You can rent a scooter for 100 baht a day and then go around; see waterfalls, hotsprings, mountains, the big buddha..

Unfortunately,we had a lot of days with rain lol...,

Where to stay : hut family,300 baht a very clean bungalow, straight in the city (http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Review-g303916-d2655450-Reviews-Family_Hut_Pai-Pai_Mae_Hong_Son_Province.html).
When you arrive in Pai by bus,go on your left and then keep going till to see a small bridge,it's just after that one.

Where to eat : 30 baht a meal, see it below ( sorry I don't know the exact address)

On our way to Pai,we met nice guys in the bus from Switzerland ( count 150 baht for the bus one way) and then we spent all the trip with them.
I found a host there : Anh; French girl with Vietnamese origins.
Her place was really cute: a small bungalow,10 min from the center of Pai.
She has some wild geckos in her place, fortunately she told us about them haha, otherwise we could have a heart attack for sure !
We just hanged around.
It was my first time that we were 3 on a scooter ( and later in Cambodia we were 4 around Angkor Wat haha)
We visited the hot springs under a heavy rain..when they say " hot springs " it's minimum 34 degrees ... be ready.
On the thursday,we have seen the waterfall, I mean " see" lol we have been there but as it was rainy we went to a nice cafe just close by lol.
Party : Ting Tong Bar
We saw some insect to eat in the market.

On the Sat,we took the bus at 2pm to go back to Chiang Mai.
We chilled in a cafe to get Wi Fi where we met 2 canadian from Montreal.
Then my friends joined us and showed us Kasalong Hostel ( 22 moo 6 sri phoom road )
Party in zoe the yellow with thai and then Spicy club.

Also, the RiverBar is nice and every wednesday there is a CS meeting at the Bus Bar if you want to meet people.

Monday : after had a night in a bus( 500 baht per person, left at 10, arrived ard 8 ), we finally arrived at our wonderful hotel : CHILLAX near Koa san road for a night( 40 euros booked by asiaweb cheaper than booking.com)

Jacuzzi in the room, swimming pool on the roof top,gym...how say.. the dream !
We haven’t done anything just relax and it was raining at the end of the day anyway.

Tuesday : we tryed to find the best deal for a double room in koa san road, most of the room are more than 500 baht, one was good : new joe
But our chose stopped on Pranakon inn just in front of the Chillax : 400 a night ,big room and easier with our luggages.

We saw a Komodo dragon in the river, first we thought it was a crocodile, than a snake but nope a dragon ... lol

We had a nice afternoon in a backpack just next to ours(Back home Backpackers),check out some books about asia and speak with people.
Ard 5 we decided to move and took the boat to the city,we ve been to asiatique center ( in the south of Bangkok) and had a pizza for dinner.
Then, haha , 3 hours to find the HSBC to take some money out and it was not an atm .. fucking hell.
We were around Patpong Area.
Most of the time,we took taxis, count around 70 baht to go to the city, obviously they will say to you 200 ,150 ... it depends, but take Taxi Meter, you start at 35 baht and then you can be sure it will be the right price.
I heard there is a but at KSR to the city for 6.5 baht but I never try it.

MBK shopping center it's not worth it to go.. at all... the nice one is Central World Plaza, you have big brands as H&M for example.
Siam Paragon is one only for luxury;Tom liked Siam Center ( all of those are next to each other).
You can find more shopping mall here : http://www.bangkok.com/top10-shopping-malls.htm

Then,you have some markets :
Night Market in Patpong: nothing special, lot of bars but KSR is so much better.
Chatuchak Week end Market: worth it to visit,if you can,go to there early, there are plenty shops and things to see.
Also, near Kao San Road, you can find t shirt for 100 baht.

Thursday : hangover day ... we ve been to a jewelry factory : Gems gallery
It was the taxi who asked us if it was ok to go as he will get commission and we paid 50 instead of 70 baht.
She repaired my bracelet for 100 baht and I bought a ring for only 1500 baht.

We've been to the CS evening and we met good people there,we finished our night at " the Club", if you like electro, go there , otherwise go to BrickBar with a liveband and commercial music.
We also celebrate Haloween there :
In KSR, 200 baht the bucket of alcohol :)
I heard also about Route66.
If you want to try insect, spiders or even scorpion, you will find it in KSR lol.

Rooftop Bar:

- Red sky: such a nice bar with reasonable price, beautiful view, great staff, it is just in the shopping center Central World.
- Sky Bar, when the movie Hangover was record, great view but overpriced ( 1 doubles vodka and 1 double whisky : 50 euros)

Others things to do in Bangkok:
- see the Wat Pho
- Grand Palace
- Take the boat on the river

If you want to see around, go to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market ,Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi if you want to see the River Kwai.
About Pattaya... I had few search and most are bad reviews this is the reason why I decided to do not go there.

Also, If you have to catch a flight , the best is to stay in the City Center, near the " Siam" , we stayed in Mascott hostel ( http://www.mascothostelbangkok.com/ ) which is 5 min walk to the station that will bring you directly to the airport for 50 baht.

We left Bangkok via plane on the 03/11/2014 to Pnom Penh in Cambodia ( 144 euros one way x 2)
