9 month in Melbourne

View London to Australia on celia0409's travel map.

I didnt really like Melbourne, why ? For my opinion, there is not enough fun there and also I didn't meet the right people.
Most of Australian doesn't want to meet new people ( especially backpackers as they don't stay for long ) as they have already their life there.
It's my point of view, most of people I know love Melbourne and say that it's the best city in the world, Tom included.

So Melbourne, its perfect if you like chilling in the cafes, having dinners in restaurants but regarding the nightlife it is too boring for me.

A bit about Melbourne :

Lot of festivals and events( F1,Tennis,Fair,white night ... )

The weather change constantly,it could be hot and 1 hour later rainy and chilly.

We arrived on the 5 th of October around 3 in the morning; we didn't book any hostel as we thought we could stay on the beach for the night ....but it was cold and windy.

Yes , Melbourne is not Brisbane, Perth or Sydney, it's cold !

To be honest, we didn't check the weather before have booked our tickets, Australia it's always warm in foreigners mind............ wrong !

Our hostel was in St kilda, which is the beach area, but also a dodgy suburb when it's not summer time.

Once arrived in the airport, catch the Skybus to the city ( 16 dollars one way and it's only 20 min ride)

Victoria market it's very nice, you can buy lot of stuff but also some cheap food such as meat or fish if you go 30 min before the shops close.

We stayed 1 week in the hostel in St kilda, time to discover Melbourne, find an apartment and start looking for jobs.

Apartment or flat share ? If you want a room for 2 people, count around 300 A$ per week in a nice building in CBD, a studio is 340 - 350 in average and you have to pay your electricity, water and internet fees ( count 100$ for electricity, 20$ for water and 79$ by vivifi for broadcast).

Our studio was on Lonsdale st, near Queen st, which is directly in the heart of Melbourne,we could do everything in walking distance.

It's Tom's favourite suburb, you can find lot of vintages shop, bars,it's pretty relax there.

One bar that you have to go is " Bimbos Deluxe" you can eat 4 $ pizza Monday to Friday during the day, 7 to 11 pm and 7 to 9 pm on friday and saturday. Pizza are so good and the atmosphere is very relax especially on the rooftop.

Lucky coq on chappel st is the same branch and cool as well.

Naked for Satan is one of the best rooftop of Melbourne, located in Fitzroy too,you have a beautiful view on Melbourne and there is 1 $ tapas.

So few places that I advise you to go :

- Spice market on Thursday night, 10 $ entry, if you are a girl you will have 5 drinks before 10 pm, 4 before 11pm etc.

- Sahara rooftop on Swanston st , where you can smoke chicha

- 1 $ champagne on Thursday for girls at Asian Beer in Melbourne Central

- Carlton bar on Bourke st.

- Mme Brussel on Bourke street. good luck to find it :P

- the Lui bar on the 55 th floor, with a view on the Dockland ( only 12 $ for a Grey Goose vodka),

- Cookie Rooftop with a good view, chill atmosphere and a cinema as well

- The Revolver : if you like electro music go there from Thursday till Sunday night non stop, this club is on Chapel St

- Central lion and Pj O briens which are both typical English pub with free entry

- Deck bar, one of the best nightclub in Melbourne, good music, free entry, easy to meet people

- CQ, nightclub on Queen st, famous nightclub in Melbourne, 20 $ entry ( I didn't like it much)

- One bar on little collins st/ elisabeth, there is a small entry and you have to up to the 1 st floor ,I can.t remember the name unfortunetely.

- Mr Collins,I haven't try it, it's the new name of Silk Road club

- The Penny Black on Sydney Road, quiet far but nice place where a live band play music inside and loud RNB/Commercial music outside

The festival that you can't miss is the Future Festival in March, count around 200 dollars for a day ( 12 till 10 pm ) but it's definitely something to do once in your life.

Moonlight cinema during the summer.

By the way, you can enjoy watching a movie on Bean Bags,it's pretty cool and it's cheaper on Tuesday. ( Melbourne Central)

If you like hot chocolate, I tried all the chocolate places in Melbourne, and the winner is............... : Chokolait in Emporium level 3.

For the coffee places, there are a lot of them, Australia is making the best coffee in the world.

They have a real culture of coffee, you can find a lot of them : latte, flat white, cappuccino, short black, long black, piccolo .... and then : weak, strong, sugar or not, skinny, full, skinny or soy milk, hot... lol so many info that when you take an order you have to get focus !

For the restaurants, one good Italian restaurant is " +39" on little bourke st.

Little Creature, the beer industry has a restaurant in Fitzroy with a very nice food and beverages.

The Mc Donald is cheaper than in France, with sometimes a meal at 5 box.( burger fries and drink)

For the Asian food you have restaurants everywhere and most of them are really cheap ( the average is 10 $ for a meal).

- 2.5 $ sushi , yoyogi is the best one

- Taiwanese on Swanston st https://www.facebook.com/Taiwan-Cafe-200756483322080/

One famous Tapas restaurant is Movida on Flinders st,the food is excellent.

Shopping in Melbourne :

You have a big mall that start on Latrobe to Bourke street, Melbourne central,Emporium and Myer/David Jones.

Bourke st,Swanston et elisabeth st are good to find something to eat and walking around.

By the way, you will find Daiso on Swanston where you can buy things at 2,80$.

Collin St is the street of all the big brand and designers, we can say it is the " fancy" street of Melbourne.

You have also DFO( outlet) in SouthWarf ( 15 min from Southbank) and Dockland with his shopping centre.

FREE TRAM, yes Melbourne has a free tram to go around the CBD.

Otherwise count around 3 dollars one way for a regular tram.

Where to find Wi Fi in Melbourne ?

So the best place to go, it's the library; you have one on Little flinders or one on Swanston which is better.

If you like parks, you must go to the Botanic Garden, you have to catch a tram but it's really nice there( you can see a picture in my album); Fitzroy Garden is nice as well.

Opposum are everywhere in Parks, especially in Flagfstaff Garden CBD.

CRICKET, did I say Cricket ? if you don't know what this sport is .. it's the Australian national sport.

All Australian are crazy of it, so we decided to watch a UK- Australia game.

It was funnier than what I expected, nice music and such a great atmosphere.

Around Melbourne :

As I got bored there, I tried my best to see everything that I could see so here you will find some others places to see around Melbourne.

Phillip Island: We booked a tour to go there, but you can also rent a car, nice landscapes, cute to see all this penguins going out from the water :P

You can see penguins for free at St Kilda Pier during the night

Grampian: Nice to see but it's not a Must do.

Great Ocean Road : MUST DO !!!!

I was lucky to have been with one of my Aussie friend by car, we played Cricket on Torquay beach, drove along the bay and saw this massive rocks.

Try to go when the weather is nice and warm to have a swim :)

Wilson Promontory: Unfortunetly I didnt have the chance to go ... but some friends loved it, you can see a lot of wildlife, even wombats !

Sorrento : you can go to 2 different beaches there : one in the ocean ,and the other one in the peninsula.

I booked a tour to see and swim with dolphins and sea lions.

I loved this experience, we were a big group of friends and we had a great time, the company was Mooraker.

You can see those sea lions looking at you, following them; it's a really lovely experience.

Ballarat : the best Wild Life Park for my point of view, only 1h30 from Melbourne CBD.

You can pat the kangaroos and they are really friendly.

As it was raining and cold, there was no one in the park, the owner invited us to the enclosure with koala and wombats.

I left Melbourne on the third of July 2014.

My gift from my boss

I'm happy to have done this experience, it taught me a lot about myself, and I met some amazing people who improved a lot my experience in Melbourne <3.
